Certainly the quirkiest and most idyllic church of the Famagusta district – if not of the island – is Ayioi Saranta Church, tucked away in a cave in a secluded road of Protaras.
Built within the cave, it’s not an easy church to find as you have to drive down a dirt road just before Grecian Park Hotel and keep an eye out for the church, hidden somewhere in the rocky hills. An easy to spot it is to look out for the dome that sits onto of the cave. The sight is definitely worth it though as one can’t help but admire the small, tranquil church. A pathway leads up to its entrance and inside is a tiny worship spot with a few icons and places to sit which is a charming and peaceful sight even for non-religious visitors.
It is unclear when it was first built and it’s name, Saranta which is the Greek word for 40, is believed to derive from the forty stalagmites on the ceiling of the cave, linked to the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste.
Walk among a beautiful sculpture park that overlooks the sea in Ayia Napa and displays works from fifty different artists.
The 20,000 square metre park offers a number of resting areas for visitors to enjoy the sculptures and take in sea views along the way. The growing collection is continually being added to. In 2015, a collection of artists from around the world created their sculptures on-site over a period of three weeks, turning the park into an open-air workshop.
The Park of Mediterranean Plants, Cacti and Succulents is an extension of the sculpture park. An ongoing project, this park showcases the various cacti and dried plant varieties of Cyprus.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, all year round, and entrance is free.
A favourite spot in Ayia Napa has to be the sea caves just outside the busy resort center. A stunning, natural landmark along the coastline of Ayia Napa, the sea caves gather a large crowd all year round for its impressive rock formations and breath-taking sunsets.
The caves that fill the area, also known as Cape Greko, were formed by the erosion of rocks from waves crashing on the cliffs over the centuries. They can be explored carefully on foot or by sea since to reach some of them you have to swim. It’s advisable to wear appropriate shoes as they can be slippery and sharp.
Legend has it that the caves were used by pirates and smugglers of the Mediterranean to hide their treasures and store prohibited goods.
There’s one main cave that’s easily accessible and is a popular spot for pictures as it offers magnificent views of the caves and a serene place to briefly rest your feet. It’s also famous for newly-wed couples to take their wedding photos as the circular cave and blue waters make a beautiful backdrop.
If you’re looking to explore the coastal landscape of the island, head to the the Cavo Greko National Forest Park in Famagusta.
The park is made up of a bicycle track, a network of walking trails with a total length of 16 kilometres and natural landmarks such as the sea caves and the charming Chapel of Ayii Anargyroi where many weddings take place.
The area is covered in low vegetation, making it home to many mammals, such as foxes, hares and hedgehogs; reptiles such as snakes and lizards, and a large number of birds. The majority of birds are migratory, with five varieties and two endemic species – one of which is the Cyprus wheatear, a migrating bird that breeds on the island.
The waters are clear blue here so take the stairs and go down for a dip, while more adventurous swimmers can jump off the cliff. The park is ideal for a long walk or a bike ride with the Mediterranean Sea as a backdrop.
Visitors interested in learning about the wildlife in the area, can visit the Environmental Centre at the start of the park, made from repurposed metal.
The short trail begins at the Konnos Beach parking area and runs for approximately 1.7km along the rugged shoreline and is located in the Famagusta District, in the Cape Greco National Forest Park Nature Trail.
It is estimated to take approximately 45 minutes and the path passes through shrubby vegetation, until it reaches the naturally-formed Cyclops Cave.
The return route is on the same trail for about 250 metres. It then follows a downward path toward the beach and finally an uphill climb back to the starting point. All along the trail, there is a seamless view of the turquoise waters and golden sands of Konnos beach, as well as of the Ayioi Anargyroi church.
Plant-enthusiasts will be able to view coastal boxthorn, prickly burnets, Phoenician juniper trees, and acacia trees along the trail.
